Michigan Launches Inquest into Power Outages
Last week’s Michigan storms left over 1 million customers without power. Many were in the dark for over a week. Damage assessment and restoration are a priority as is planning and preparation for these disasters. Residents want to see improvement in all areas and the MPSC states “… we have more work to do, and we have to do it faster.”
Concerns aren’t limited to the Midwest and are voiced across the country since the increase in frequent, intense storms are apparent. We can’t rely solely on historical data to prepare for the ever-changing weather. The MPSC is pushing utilities to be more transparent around their efforts while encouraging customers to discuss impacts of outages, especially those that are more at risk.

Brutal Cold grips central United States
Temperatures have dropped more than 40° below the average.
Power costs have soared from $4 / MWh to over $600 / MWh.
Most of the news we are seeing is coming from Texas for several reasons:
- Well, it is really cold; well below freezing for nearly 5 days.
- Texas is a power island. They have no connections outside of Texas so, other states cannot supply power for them.
- Texas’ energy infrastructure is not built for freezing temperatures. This results in water main breaks, gas pipes freezing, and power equipment not operating properly.
Outside of Texas the Polar Vortex will have economic impact but, electricity and gas are generally staying on.
If your power or heat is interrupted, CALL your local utility.

The End May Be Nearer: Doomsday Clock Moves Within 100 Seconds Of Midnight
Originally created to help the public recognize the threat atomic weapons pose to humanity, the Doomsday Clock has evolved to include various hazards that endanger the world. Since its creation in 1947, the clock has been moved many times. The farthest was 17 minutes away in 1991 when the Cold War ended. In recent years it has increased to 2 minutes. However, it is currently the closest it’s ever been at 100 seconds to midnight. Many reasons for the changes stem from global agreements regarding nuclear arms and the growing number of climate change disasters. The board formed by scientists and comprised of 13 Nobel laureates urges the public to heed this warning and take action before it’s too late.

TAE Technologies Wins Three INFUSE Awards to Further Fusion Energy Research
The US Department of Energy (DOE) awarded TAE with 3 INFUSE awards for their “pursuit of clean, safe, cost-effective, scalable, fusion energy, and a continued recognition that it is a viable effort worth public funding and collaboration”. Federal support is necessary to help commercial fusion power plants recognize new ways to efficiently provide carbon-free electricity production. TAE will focus on the US’s energy needs while addressing environmental and security requirements “by resolving industrial-scale issues of technology, cost, and safety”. Using the DOE’s resources, we should see an acceleration in fusion energy development to better our environment and economy using renewable energy.

Micro Power Grids Emerge as Way to Keep Electricity on During Shutoffs
California residents recently underwent massive blackouts due to PG&E’s decision to shut down power in hopes to decrease the wildfire risk. Hundreds of thousands were left without power for days. However, Fremont, CA installed “a microgrid, a small, self-contained electrical system, around a fire station”. Using solar panels, batteries and a generator, they can operate independently and focus on public safety. These microgrids are better for the environment, save customers money on energy bills, and provide safety nets for many that require electricity. The CA Public Utility Commission is exploring similar projects to see how these technologies could be implemented, especially for blackout situations.

Realgy’s response to misleading information
A sales agent not acting in the best interest of the customer is not acting in the best interest of the company they work for. This is one of our approaches to a misrepresentation of Realgy’s services and values:
Natural Gas Safety
Natural gas in one of the safest energy sources available; it is non-toxic and has no odor in its natural form. Natural gas will not ignite by itself, but combined with air and a spark it will catch fire.
When not burned completely natural gas produces carbon monoxide (CO), which can cause flu-like symptoms including:
headaches, nausea, dizziness, drowsiness or fatigue, burning eyes, confusion and loss of coordination
Over 10,000 people receive medical treatment and hundreds die each year from carbon monoxide poisoning. In many cases, victims are aware they are not well, but become too disoriented to save themselves. Particularly vulnerable are pregnant women, small children, senior citizens and people with heart or respiratory problems.
It is always recommended to have a working CO detector in your home or business if you use natural gas as an energy source.
In its natural state natural gas has no smell, so your utility company adds a chemical odorant called methanethiol to help make natural gas leaks easier to detect. If you smell rotten eggs, it’s most likely not a well hidden Easter egg, but a natural gas leak, leave the building and call your Utility Company right away. You can find an emergency hotline on most utility invoices if there is not emergency number call the customer service number.
