Illinois Shines

With the rise of solar usage, incentives are more available now and many are implemented through state programs. Illinois Shines was created by the Illinois Power Agency (IPA) to support developments for distributed solar generation and community solar. Monitored in accordance with the Future Energy Jobs Act, the IPA purchases Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) from community solar projects and sets costs through the Adjustable Block Program known as Illinois Shines.

Community solar benefits areas that cannot install rooftop arrays due to limited space, high costs, and issues with zoning laws. Illinois Shines increases solar access for residents that may not easily receive green energy while also providing information and inspections for vendors to become approved.

Illinois Shines’ evaluation of Realgy Energy Service’s solar arrays at Ridgeland Recreation Complex recently concluded. They state Realgy’s project is in compliance with program guidelines. We are proud to serve the Illinois community and help the state meet its renewable energy goals.

Exxon Mobil Lends Its Support to a Carbon Tax Proposal

Fossil fuels contain carbon that is released into the atmosphere as carbon dioxide (C02) (and carbon monoxide (CO) if combustion is not complete). Exxon Mobil sells fossil fuels. C02 is a major contributor to global climate change as a greenhouse gas.

SO WHY WOULD EXXON MOBIL SUPPORT A CARBON TAX PROPOSAL?

Two possible answers:

  1. They realize global warming is happening and that fossil fuels contribute.
  2. By supporting the idea or proposal, NOT an actual bill or tax, they can win the publicity battle.

Exxon Mobil is defending themselves in multiple courts regarding liability for past emissions. This statement undoubtedly helps their case.

IF a carbon tax is ever enacted, the law would undoubtedly protect companies from lawsuits for prior emissions.

2012 Energy Star Tax Credits

For the year 2012, the Federal Government is offering a tax credit for the purchase of geothermal heat pumps, small residential wind turbines, and solar energy systems including solar water heaters.

This tax credit will expire on December 31, 2016, and will cover thirty percent of the cost with no limit. The only restriction is that the products purchased must be for an existing or new construction home that is a main residence or second home, and unfortunately rental properties do not count.

Although Energy Star qualified products may cost more initially than a standard model in the long run they will result in lower energy bills. The savings from these energy-efficient products can add up to thousands of dollars over the life of the unit.

Check out the Energy Star website www.energystar.gov to learn more about the Energy Star tax credits for 2012
