The End May Be Nearer: Doomsday Clock Moves Within 100 Seconds Of Midnight
Originally created to help the public recognize the threat atomic weapons pose to humanity, the Doomsday Clock has evolved to include various hazards that endanger the world. Since its creation in 1947, the clock has been moved many times. The farthest was 17 minutes away in 1991 when the Cold War ended. In recent years it has increased to 2 minutes. However, it is currently the closest it’s ever been at 100 seconds to midnight. Many reasons for the changes stem from global agreements regarding nuclear arms and the growing number of climate change disasters. The board formed by scientists and comprised of 13 Nobel laureates urges the public to heed this warning and take action before it’s too late.
