This device harnesses the cold night sky to generate electricity in the dark
A new generator using thermodynamics produces enough electricity to power a small light bulb. Although it produces much less than a solar panel, this device is used when the sun is down. Triggered by Cooling night air, energy is produced within the “anti-solar panel”. Eventually, everyone would like to see this piece of equipment on a larger scale in hopes to help remote locations, areas that receive little to no light for months at a time, or as backup power. The possibilities will continue to grow as will the work to optimize all uses of this invention.

The next target in the climate-change debate: your gas stove
History was made when Berkeley, CA banned natural gas systems in new buildings. Now multiple cities cross-country are following suit. The strategy is to move towards a greener energy solution through the electric grid. Renewable energy is increasingly powering the grid with many states planning to become fully reliant on green energy by 2050.
However, opposers say increased usage of gas cuts carbon emissions since it burns cleaner than oil or coal. Improved technologies also limit emissions showing a recent decline in those numbers. Other disputes of the proposal include that many business models would be upended, completely halted or suffer large losses. Either way you look at it, the hope is to improve the environment with the least casualties along the way.

Turning The World’s Waste Problems Into Energy Solutions
Solar, wind, and water are the most commonly known green energies used across the world. However, with the amount of waste produced each day, engineers are constantly looking to create positive use out of our trash through waste-to-energy (WTE). Many countries including the US have been using WTEs for some time but, some have a much higher production rate which creates many issues. China, being one of these countries, has invested in the world’s largest WTE plant to cut the amount of carbon dioxide released from their landfills. As their economy and population grows, their government is transitioning to cleaner energy. Various areas have similar systems to create clean energy out of unwanted waste. These innovations will hopefully yield “a continuing shift in attitudes toward cleaner, more sustainable production” to “become the norm around the world, combining the future of waste and the future of energy”.

After months of contentious debate, Ohio nuclear bailout bill becomes law
The State of Ohio passed a bill to pay a nuclear power plant $150 million/year to keep operating. It was immediately signed by the Governor.
Yes, you read that right.
A new tax, $0.85/month on all residential customers from 2021 – 2027 is expected to generate $170 million/year.
In addition, this new law will drop the renewable requirements for utilities from 12.5% to 8.5% by 2026. But, after 2026 there is no further requirement. Yep- back to free markets.
This action is in sharp contrast to surrounding states that increased the renewable requirements for energy delivered to their residents.
Ohio chose to bail out a failing power plant at the expense of its future in renewable power.

Love Michigan Clean Energy Plan
Consumers Energy unveiled a “Love Michigan” tour to introduce their Clean Energy Plan. Their focus is on meeting the state’s electricity demands with 90% clean energy resources by 2040 while reducing carbon emissions and eliminating coal. They will be encouraging every resident and business to participate in various programs designed to save energy and money. Optimization of new technologies geared towards these goals will be put in place to rely more on renewable energy sources such as wind and solar.

More renewable energy options available under Duke Energy’s Green Source Advantage
Duke Energy has expanded renewable energy choices for their large energy users. Through the Green Source Advantage (GSA) program, customers can choose their renewable supplier and negotiate preferred price terms and contract length. They will take applicants until the 600 MW capacity is fully subscribed. Partial capacity is set aside for military installations and University of North Carolina institutions. Duke has been investing in renewable energy and increasing solar energy awareness for all customers “to create a smarter energy future for the people and communities it serves”.

Choose your own electric company in Arizona?
Arizona has been discussing energy deregulation to decide if they will allow customers to choose where their energy supply comes from. The utilities currently monopolize the state and consumers must use the utility they are assigned. Through competition, the prices would be driven down and improvements in dependability and customer service would occur.
Commissioner Justin Olson states, “Data shows that since 2008, there has been a significant decrease in rates in the 14 states that have competition compared to a significant increase in rates to states that still prohibit competition in the energy sector.”
Another option would be partial competition in which only businesses or aggregates would be able to shop around for their energy. It is unclear when a vote will take place. Until more questions are asked and answered, Arizona will remain regulated by the state.

A green power seller reacts to pending industry reform—with sky-high prices
Green Energy doesn’t have to be much more expensive than grid supplied energy.
An energy marketer is complaining that under recent changes to the Illinois Customer Choice program, their offer of green energy will increase dramatically. Their current offer is 78% higher than ComEd’s rate or $0.12 vs. $0.0672 for 12 months. They are expressing surprise that customers are complaining when they find out.
The changes to the Illinois Customer Choice program will require disclosure or comparison to the utility price and prevent short term fixed prices (trial offers) from renewing into long terms.

Water breakthrough: Device uses solar power to produce clean water – and electricity
Obtaining fresh drinking water is not easy for certain areas of the world. There has been constant research regarding various projects to convert non-drinkable water into something potable. Peng Wang of King Abdullah University and his team released their discoveries on the topic this week. The technology they use “recycles waste heat from photovoltaic (PV) solar panels using a multi-stage membrane distillation system to produce clean, drinkable water.” The idea is to be as useful as possible for those with limited access to fresh water such as in Africa and Asia. The benefits from the PV system alongside the yielding of water speak for themselves. However, looking at the bigger picture, it has potential to be used wherever there is a need for clean water- to irrigate plants, to clean, or even to colonize another planet.
