American solar industry rises up against Suniva Section 201 trade petition

American solar industry rises up against Suniva Section 201 trade petition

Suniva and SolarWorld have filed a trade petition with the US International Trade Commission (ITC). The petition seeks to subject imported solar equipment to trade tariffs. This could double solar prices, stopping growth and destroying 88,000 jobs. The energy independence the US has gained would halt and country-wide investments would be jeopardized. The Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) leads the opposition due to the endangerment of America’s solar jobs.

Consumers Energy gets green light for rate hike

How hard is it to get a raise of $29,211,000? If you’re Consumers Energy, all you had to do was ask!

Yes, as a monopoly provider (all utilities are monopolies) of natural gas they told Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) regulators they want to spend $90,000,000 next year on improvements.

After review, the MPSC approved the $29 million. Consumers will increase all their customer’s bills to collect this amount and margin on it! Yep, a utility ONLY makes money by spending money. So, the MPSC will make sure the money is spent on system improvements and not just new conference centers.

50% Rise in Renewable Energy Needed to Meet Ambitious State Standards

Renewable energy production (wind, solar, wave, and biomass) has been the fastest growing energy producing technology over the last 8 years. However, if renewable energy is to meet all State issued renewable goals, it’s hardly started. Every State has set a goal in order to shift energy production to a sustainable effort, increase technology jobs in their State, and reduce greenhouse gases.

No state has decreased their renewable energy goal. The cost of renewables is comparable to fossil fuel technology. So… how much renewable energy has to come online to meet ALL the State’s renewable goals? The chart below shows the current level of renewable energy production in 2017 and the growth that is required to meet each region’s collective renewable energy standard. Renewable energy has to grow from under 10 TWh to over 150 TWh. Such growth is exiting and will cause new jobs, less pollution, and new technology.

Consider the following; if just 10% (current estimates are close to 30%) of cars and trucks in the US converted to electric power (battery), the renewable energy produced would be used ONLY to power those cars and trucks.

Don’t squander America’s leadership in nuclear energy

nuclear

Nuclear energy in the private sector has been beneficial but certain needs may not be met if energy innovation is purely in their hands. Federal control is necessary for national security. To maintain a leadership role worldwide, the U.S. must instill several strategies within the nuclear energy realm.

  1. Ensure significant and safe production
  2. Compete in the international marketplace and win for the private sector
  3. Actively partner with countries that have no nuclear energy
  4. Lead innovatively

Continuing to employ private-public partnerships domestically and internationally will prove the U.S. can grow their influence and safely lead the way for the next generation.

Senate appropriators advance $38.4 billion energy spending bill

The Energy and Water Development Appropriations Act was approved to support investments with infrastructure, research, and security. The $38.4 billion budget for the bill is above the President’s request and delegates the bulk of spending towards the Energy Department. Some disagreement on details include amendments to boost spending on solar and wind energy. Programs that encourage the U.S.’s energy independence are prioritized within an amendment that supports nuclear. Sen. Graham believes without supporting nuclear, the U.S. will not become the low carbon, green economy we want to be. When the bill comes up for a final vote on the floor, we expect to see a push to boost renewable energy.

Buying power from an indie? You may be paying too much.

Customer Choice is usually introduced as unleashing market forces to bring about savings compared to the monopoly utility. And it does. Then Energy Marketers conform to the “landscape” the regulators and politicians create. The latest case in point is Illinois. IL trumpeted savings provided by Energy Marketers in 2013 at $37 BILLION.

Then the Energy Marketers who bring market pricing direct to consumers had an increase due to the following changes:

  1. Regulatory demands- oversight and compliance
  2. Taxes and fees- IL charges Energy marketers for the agency that buys power for the utilities (yes, you read that right)
  3. Utilities cost for supplying power decreased to nearly below market pricing at times (see comment 2)
  4. Municipalities were allowed to offer their residents energy; typically low for the first year which then increased. Of course, the municipalities wanted the Energy Marketers to pay them so the resident’s cost increased.

Consider how the above market changes caused $37 BILLION in 2013 to change…

value

These changes produce: less innovation, lower utility costs, and higher market costs. The current environment in IL is that the regulatory and political consideration seems to be driving out Energy Marketers to facilitate the return of the monopoly utility.

Realgy still provides savings compared to Illinois utilities.
