Can solar energy compete with coal? Ask Elgin officials.

Elgin Mayor Dave Kaptain said, “It’s the wave of the future. Businesses get that. We have people employed in solar and wind energy in Elgin. We don’t have anybody employed in coal.”

Elgin recently approved a 1,200 kW solar project being installed on an industrial building. That’s enough energy to power 170 homes. Unlike the 6 solar projects Realgy operates, this project is designed to supply its energy off-site as none of its solar energy is intended to be used within the building. It is called community solar, where the community surrounding the solar project can be served by the solar energy.

Congratulations to Rainy Investments for a first of its kind solar project and to the City of Elgin for making it happen.
